Welcome to Janet Groves Art

Introduction

Welcome to my gallery. You can find a range of my works on this website, including paintings featuring Edgar Nevermore, Goldilocks, a selection of Landscapes and of Dog Portraits. Though many are marked SOLD, if there is a painting that particularly interests you I am able to paint another in similar style.

I was born in Birmingham in 1942 and moved to West Cornwall in 1969.

I am largely self-taught but studied watercolour at Penzance Art School under the late Colin Scott, a wonderful teacher, to this day sadly missed, who inspired me to see another side to the everyday.

I work in watercolour, oil, pastel, egg tempera, always in figurative style and with a fair degree of detail, particularly when working in tempera. Most of the work is drawn deeply from the imagination. In particular, I chronicle in tempera and pure gold leaf (a bit of a medieval thing) the life and times of Edgar Nevermore, Raven Extraordinaire. Edgar wears a variety of golden crowns, almost always sits on a silken cushion and eats cherries…or sometimes strawberries…or even apricots. Of late, I have been embellishing his crowns with semi-precious gemstones. These are tiny works, painted in great detail on 7″ x 5″ gessoed poplar panels in black panel frames.

Another line of imaginative work sees the adventures of Goldilocks and her many and varied encounters with the Three Bears. These are in three forms, all in watercolour. In one series I tell the story of how Goldilocks first encounters the Bear Family, her exploration of their house, her discovery of Daddy Bear’s wine store and her gradual descent into habitual drunkenness to the point where she is obliged to go off to rehab. a second series follows the adventures that Goldilocks and the bears have together, and the third series ‘adapts’ the work of the Old Masters to a ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’ theme. Here I plunder the works of Manet, Toulouse-Lautrec, the Pre-Raphaelites, etc.

In addition to landscapes in oil, I also paint portraits of dogs according to their owners wishes.

I have exhibited widely, including the Royal Academy, London, The Mall Galleries, London, Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, South West Academy, Exeter, The West of England Academy, Bristol and the Llewellyn Alexander Fine Art Gallery, London.

In 2005 I became an elected member of the prestigious Birmingham Art Circle, which was founded in 1879 by Walter Langley of Newlyn School fame et al., and in 2020 was made an Honorary Member.

My work features in collections both here in the UK and abroad.
